The Inspiration Behind Picket Fences
The inspiration for Picket Fences Foundation began with a very personal story.
The founder’s daughter, Samantha, has developmental delays related to epilepsy. Like many young adults with disabilities, she wanted to live independently but did not initially have all the life and job skills needed to do so.
Samantha was accepted into the HUD-supported Waterfall ARC community in Clearwater, where she began building the skills needed for greater independence.Meet Samantha
Samantha’s Journey
Over the past several years, Samantha has made tremendous progress. She has held several jobs, including working at Dunkin’ Donuts, and continues to grow in confidence and independence.
Today, Samantha lives in her own home in Dunedin, Florida and operates Sam’s Happy Pet Care, where she provides dog walking and pet sitting services for members of the community. Through this work, she continues to build valuable life skills such as responsibility, communication, and time management.
Samantha is also supported by her mini golden doodle, Sydney, who plays an important role in her daily life.
A Social Enterprise for Independence
Sam’s Happy Pet Care is more than a pet care service. It also functions as a small supported employment and social program connected to the mission of Picket Fences.
The experience helps Samantha develop real-world job skills while demonstrating how neurodiverse individuals can contribute meaningfully to their communities when given the right opportunities and support.
Expanding Opportunities for Others
Samantha’s journey inspired the creation of Picket Fences. Our goal is to expand and replicate housing, employment, and independence opportunities so that more neurodiverse adults can pursue their own path toward independent living
